Emotional Regulation

When your emotions feel like a flood — and daily life becomes unbearably heavy — that is not weakness. It is a signal asking to be heard.

Emotional Dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation is the difficulty in managing, regulating and recovering from intense emotions in ways proportionate to the situation. It can show up as overwhelming emotional reactions, an inability to calm down, or, on the opposite end, emotional numbness and disconnection.

It often has roots in trauma. When the nervous system has learned to operate under conditions of chronic threat — through relational trauma, prolonged stress, or painful early experiences — it can remain in a state of alert long after the danger has passed. A seemingly minor situation can trigger responses that feel disproportionate. Because they are not a response to the present moment — they are an echo of the past.

This is not weakness. It is the way the body and mind learn to survive. And it can change.

What Emotional Dysregulation is

Emotional dysregulation is the difficulty in managing and recovering from intense emotions in ways proportionate to the situation. It often has roots in trauma — when the nervous system has learned to operate under chronic threat, it can remain on alert long after the danger has passed.

A seemingly small trigger can produce reactions that feel disproportionate. Because they are not a response to the present — they are an echo of the past.

How emotional dysregulation shows up
You may recognise some of these in yourself:
  • Intense or chronic anxiety — a sense of dread that never fully lifts

  • Anger outbursts or emotional shutdown that feel out of proportion

  • Negative, self-critical thoughts on a loop

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Withdrawing from relationships and daily activities

  • Physical symptoms with no clear medical explanation — fatigue, tension, digestive issues

If any of this sounds familiar — you are not alone.

FAQ

How do I know if what I feel is anxiety or something deeper?
Anxiety and depression often co-exist and can be difficult to distinguish on your own. That is precisely the work of the diagnostic meeting — to understand together what is happening and what you need.

I feel low but I don't know if I need therapy.
That uncertainty is itself a good reason to reach out. The diagnostic meeting is free and comes with no obligations — just a conversation to help you understand where you are.

Can physical symptoms improve through therapy?
Yes. Many physical symptoms — headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, chronic tension — have a strong emotional component. When we regulate the emotional level, somatic symptoms often improve alongside.

Can emotional dysregulation be linked to trauma?
Very often, yes. Experiences of trauma — even those we don't recognise as such — shape the way our nervous system responds. This explains why some reactions feel disproportionate. They are not.

How quickly will I see results?
It depends on the person and the situation. Many people feel relief and clarity from the very first sessions. Deeper change takes time — but the process of change begins immediately.

I feel overwhelmed but I don't know if I "deserve" to seek help.
You always do. The distress itself is reason enough. You don't need to have a "serious enough" problem to deserve support.
